New law in PA takes effect today

No living will? Pa. law will decide who makes decisions for you
PITTSBURGH - A new state law taking effect Monday will determine how end-of-life decisions are made for Pennsylvanians who don’t leave a living will or other instructions should they become incapacitated.

Transdisciplinary Palliative Care Courses

The ACE Project is a NCI-funded study that seeks to enhance the advocacy and leadership skills of competitively-selected psychologists, social workers and spiritual care professionals through an innovative transdisciplinary educational experience. Four annual courses will be held followed by a Reunion Conference in October 2010 that reunites all past participants and faculty to disseminate findings, share lessons learned and strengthen participant change efforts. VA Palliative Care Fellowship

Applications are due January 19th for this year’s Veterans Affairs Interprofessional Fellowship in Palliative Care, based in Bronx, VA. The stipend for social work fellows is in the low $30,000s. Hartford Doctoral Fellows Program

Two-year grants of $25,000 per year will be provided to outstanding doctoral students doing dissertation research on older adults and/or their families. The grant is intended to enhance quality research and professional development, supplement academic career guidance, and build upon peer networking opportunities through various institutes and meetings. The program is funded by the John A. Hartford Foundation and administered by The Gerontological Society of America (GSA). It is a component of the nationwide Geriatric Social Work Initiative (GSWI), which seeks to expand the training of social workers that can improve the health and well-being of older persons and their families.
